Biz Updates: CBI arrests CGST Assistant Commissioner in bribery case, searches conducted in Guwahati-Hyderabad

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Assistant Commissioner of CGST posted at GST Commissionerate in Guwahati on charges of demanding and accepting bribe. The arrested accused has been identified as M Srinivas Rao, who was posted as Assistant Commissioner of CGST at GST Commissionerate in Guwahati.

A case was registered against the said accused on a complaint filed by the CBI. It was alleged that the complainant was served demand and show cause notices and he was summoned several times to the CGST office by the accused. The complainant further alleged that he had done civil works for which all the outstanding taxes were paid by him.

The complainant further alleged that on visiting the CGST office to inquire about the matter, the Assistant Commissioner demanded Rs two lakh as bribe to pass an order in his favour. After negotiations, the accused allegedly agreed to accept a bribe of Rs 50,000.

CBI Arrests GST Commissioner for Bribe of Rs 3.83 Lakh

The CBI then laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the complainant. The accused was then arrested by the CBI. Searches were conducted at the official and residential premises of the accused in Guwahati and Hyderabad. The investigation is ongoing and detailed information is awaited.
