Lahore: Pakistan, which is surrounded by issues like poverty, hunger, terrorism and inflation, has now come into the limelight because of a woman. Justice Alia Neelam took oath as the Chief Justice of Lahore High Court on Thursday. The special thing is that Neelam is the first woman of Pakistan who has taken the post of Chief Justice of a High Court. Punjab Governor Sardar Salim Haider Khan administered the oath of office to her. Punjab province’s first woman Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also attended the swearing-in ceremony.

Justice Neelam (57) was third in the seniority order of judges in Lahore High Court, but the Judicial Commission headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faiz Isa decided to nominate her for this post. With the announcement of making Neelam the Chief Justice, her photo taken with members of the ruling Sharif family started going viral on social media. Through this, her opponents wanted to indicate that she is associated with the ruling Muslim League (Nawaz).

Justice Neelam was born on 12 November 1966 and she obtained LLB degree from Punjab University in 1995. She registered herself as a lawyer in 1996. Justice Neelam registered herself as an advocate in the Supreme Court in 2008. She became a temporary judge of Lahore High Court in 2013 and was promoted and made a permanent judge on 16 March 2015.
