Delhi University (DU) Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh on Thursday said that the university will give admission using class 12th marks to fill the remaining vacant seats after the regular admission process is completed. The announcement comes at a time when the UGC has issued an SOP for central universities to ensure that all seats in UG and PG courses are filled. The UGC said that keeping seats vacant for the entire academic session is not only a waste of resources but also deprives many students of quality higher education.
UGC had raised the issue of vacant seats
After this, reacting to the directive, Yogesh Singh told ANI, “We welcome the UGC’s directive. We are equally sensitive to the fact that seats should not remain vacant in any course. We will use class 12 numbers to fill the vacant seats in UG courses. We will not conduct entrance exams, but will ensure that all the seats in the university are filled.” According to the SOP issued by UGC, entrance exams can be conducted for graduation (UG) and postgraduation (PG) courses if seats remain vacant after the regular admission phase.
5 thousand seats were vacant last year
It is worth noting that last year about 5000 seats remained vacant in DU, while the university had adopted several methods to fill all the seats. The admission process is going on for the academic year 2024-25. Delhi University is offering over 71,000 seats in over 65 colleges through the Common University Entrance Test Undergraduate (CUET UG).
