Currently, the Dalai Lama is recovering in New York after a successful knee ‘replacement’ surgery on June 28. The Tibetan spiritual leader’s meeting with the top US State Department official comes months after President Biden signed a law that seeks to enhance US support for Tibet and promote dialogue between China and the Dalai Lama for a peaceful resolution of the dispute over the status and governance of the remote Himalayan region.

China opposes the ‘Resolve Tibet Act’

China opposed the ‘Resolve Tibet Act’ passed by the US House of Representatives in February and the Senate in May and called it “destabilizing”. The US State Department said in a release that President Biden’s message to the Dalai Lama was delivered by Uzra Zeya, US Deputy Secretary of State for Civil Security, Democracy and Human Rights Affairs and Special Coordinator for Tibet Affairs. It said, “During the meeting, Zeya conveyed President Biden’s best wishes to the Dalai Lama for his good health and reaffirmed the US commitment to efforts to protect the human rights of Tibetans and preserve their unique historical, linguistic, cultural and religious heritage.”
