Lucara Diamond Corp, a Canadian mining company, said in a statement that it has recovered an ‘extraordinary’ diamond from its Karowe mine in western Botswana. Lucara said that it is a ‘high quality’ diamond and was discovered with the help of X-ray technology. In terms of weight, it is the largest diamond found in more than 100 years. It is the second largest diamond in the world extracted from a mine after the Cullinan diamond discovered in South Africa in 1905.
The Cullinan diamond was 3,106 carats and was carved into several pieces, some of which are part of the British royal jewellery.
