Bangladesh Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan resigns, protesters had threatened

Dhaka: After the coup in Bangladesh, now the Chief Justice of Bangladesh, Obaidul Hasan, has resigned from his post. Earlier, the protesters had surrounded the Supreme Court and given Obaidul Hasan an hour’s time to resign. Obaidul Hasan had called a meeting of all the judges without consulting the newly formed interim government, which the protesters opposed and insisted on the demand for resignation. Obaidul Hasan was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court last year. Hasan is considered a loyalist of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Sheikh Hasina had to resign from the post of Prime Minister amid widespread protests in Bangladesh against the reservation system in jobs and she also had to leave the country. After Sheikh Hasina, Nobel Prize-winning economist Mohammad Yunus has been chosen as the head of the interim government of Bangladesh. Bangladesh’s newly formed interim government has stressed the need to maintain ‘balance’ in Dhaka’s relations with ‘big countries’. It has also said that restoring law and order is the main priority of the interim government at this time, other tasks will also be done after the first goal is achieved.

Due to the gathering of hundreds of protesting students, Bangladeshi army personnel have been deployed in the Supreme Court premises. According to the ‘Daily Star’ report, the Chief Justice told journalists in the Supreme Court premises that he has decided to resign keeping in mind the safety of the judges of the Supreme Court, High Court and lower courts across the country amid the changing circumstances.
