Dhaka: After the coup in Bangladesh, the interim government led by Nobel Prize winner Professor Mohammad Yunus will now be sworn in on August 8. Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman gave this information. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, General Waqar said that the interim government could be sworn in at 8 pm on Thursday. He also said that the Advisory Council could have 15 members. Till then, Mohammad Yunus has appealed to the protesters to maintain peace.
Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin on Tuesday appointed economist Yunus (84) as the head of the interim government. A day earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post and left the country after violent protests over a dispute related to reservation in jobs. Nobel Prize winner Professor Mohammad Yunus, who was appointed the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, on Wednesday appealed to everyone to “maintain peace” and “avoid all forms of violence”. Yunus (84) said, “Let’s make the best use of this new victory. Let us not let this victory go to waste due to any mistake of ours.”
Big message to Bangladesh
Yunus, an economist by profession, is likely to return home from Paris to take charge. He said, “I appeal to everyone to maintain peace in the current situation and avoid all kinds of violence and damage.” Earlier, students in Bangladesh managed traffic as volunteers for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. At the same time, a top police officer called on every member of the police force to gradually return to duty and restore the law and order situation. According to reports in the local media, chaos is at its peak in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister on Monday and policemen are not available to maintain law and order or manage traffic. Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) AKM Shahidur Rahman was appointed as the top officer of Bangladesh Police on Tuesday to deal with the current crisis.
Students took charge
The Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported that students, including members of the Bangladesh Scouts, were seen managing traffic at several places. In the latest reshuffle in the security forces on Wednesday, Rahman has now been appointed the Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The newspaper reported that several policemen were reported to have been killed in attacks on police stations and various centres across the country on Tuesday, creating an unprecedented situation. The authorities on Wednesday reshuffled the top posts of the RAB and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the Pratham Alo news portal reported. It said, “AKM Shahidur Rahman has been appointed the Director General of RAB, while Mohammad Moin Ul Hasan will replace Habibur Rahman as the Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.” Hours before this reshuffle, President Mohammad Shahabuddin appointed Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus as the head of the interim government on Tuesday night.
Khaled Zia addressed the gathering
Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who was released from jail after her arch-rival Hasina was ousted from power, addressed a huge rally of her party in Dhaka, where she appealed for peace to rebuild the country. Zia (79) was sentenced to 17 years in prison on corruption charges in 2018 during Hasina’s rule. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) President Zia said, “I have now been released. I want to thank those brave people who were in a ‘do or die’ struggle to make the impossible possible.” She said, “This victory has brought us a new possibility to overcome loot, corruption and sick politics. We need to make this country a prosperous country.” Zia said, “No destruction, no resentment and no revenge, we need love and peace to rebuild our country.” Attorney General Abu Mohammad Aminuddin, who was appointed in October 2020, resigned on Wednesday.
