Till the Corona period, senior citizens and women of the country were getting the benefit of discount on train tickets. This facility was discontinued from March 2020. Earlier, female senior citizens used to get 50 percent discount on train tickets and male and transgender senior citizens used to get 40 percent discount. This discount on train tickets was available in all express and mail trains including Rajdhani, Shatabdi. According to the Railways, men and transgenders aged 60 years or above and women aged 58 years or above are senior citizens.

Railways benefited from the end of the discount
Railways has benefited a lot from the end of the discount given to senior citizens on train tickets. An RTI revealed that between April 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023, the Railways did not give concessions to about 8 crore senior citizens. During this period, the Railways received a total revenue of Rs 5,062 crore from senior citizens. It also includes an additional Rs 2,242 crore earned from the end of subsidy.
