The Free Internet Bill was placed before the Rajya Sabha in December 2023. V Shivdasan, a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), introduced this bill. According to the new update, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has told the Rajya Sabha Secretary General that the President has recommended consideration of this bill. The bill states that either the government should directly provide free internet to the people or give full subsidy on the services of a service provider.

According to the bill, if a citizen is not able to recharge the internet, then it is the responsibility of the government to provide him free internet. However, it is not yet known that to which income people free internet will be available. How many GB of free internet will be available and what will be its rules, it is not yet known. This bill emphasizes on the right to internet just like the right to speech. At present, many countries like Lithuania, Singapore and Switzerland are providing free internet to their citizens.
