Should the mission prove successful, it would mark only the sixth inaugural journey of a crewed spacecraft in US history. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson underscored the significance of this moment during a May news conference, highlighting the lineage of space exploration from Mercury to Gemini, Apollo, the space shuttle, SpaceX’s Dragon, and now Starliner. Notably, veteran NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams will make history as the crew aboard this landmark mission.

Testing Starliner’s Capabilities

Upon reaching orbit, the Starliner crew capsule will detach from the Atlas V rocket and initiate its own engines. The journey to the International Space Station is expected to span more than 24 hours, with docking scheduled for 1:50 p.m. ET on Sunday. During the mission, astronauts will conduct various tests to evaluate Starliner’s performance, including thruster functionality, spacesuit compatibility, and manual piloting capabilities.
