The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India i.e. TRAI had given a deadline of 1 September 2024 to telecom companies to stop promotional spam SMS. But now on the demand of stakeholders, TRAI has extended this deadline. TRAI has extended this deadline by 1 month to 1 October 2024. In view of the increasing cases of fake calls and SMS, TRAI had given instructions to telecom companies. TRAI had said that telecom companies should curb SMS containing URL, APK files, OTT links and phone numbers.
What instructions did TRAI give to telecom companies?
TRAI wants to curb fake SMS and spam calls. TRAI has directed that if any organization or institution misuses its SIP / PRI lines to make spam calls or SMS, then all its telecom resources should be shut down by the telecom service provider. There is also an instruction to blacklist that entity.
Telecom operators had asked for time
After TRAI’s instruction, telecom operators are working on it. They had requested TRAI to extend its deadline, which TRAI has accepted and now the new deadline is October 1.
Users become victims of fraud
Actually, scammers deliver spam SMS to innocent users and steal the user’s banking details through URL/APK link. After getting the information, they empty the user’s bank account. To stop these frauds, TRAI has given instructions to telecom operators.
