Washington: Donald Trump has taken a big decision before the presidential election to be held in America on November 5. The former US President said in a petition filed in a court on Tuesday that he would plead not guilty to criminal charges in a revised indictment, which accuses him of attempting to overturn his 2020 election defeat. In view of the presidential election, Trump has waived his right to appear in court and has now authorized his lawyers to file a petition. The decision on this petition of Trump in the revised indictment of America before the presidential election will be very big.
However, a request is yet to be made on behalf of Trump in the revised indictment. The revised indictment, received by Trump’s special counsel Jack Smith last week, includes the same four charges that prosecutors brought against Trump last year. He was accused of attempting to defraud the United States, obstructing the election of congressional certification and depriving voters of the right to a fair vote.
Relief was received from the US Supreme Court
The new indictment was prepared in a revised form and redefined some of the charges after the US Supreme Court cited broad immunity from criminal prosecution for official actions taken by him as president. Trump appeared in federal court in Washington in August 2023 to plead not guilty to the charges in the initial indictment. Prosecutors and Trump’s lawyers are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday to determine the next step after the Supreme Court’s immunity decision.
