Kamala Harris achieved a big milestone, became the first Indian-African woman to get the presidential election ticket

Washington: US Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday secured the official presidential nomination from the Democratic Party. With this, she has become the first Indian-African woman to get a presidential election ticket from a major political party in the country. Harris (59) will face former President and Republican Party candidate Donald Trump in the general election to be held in November. Last Friday, Harris was declared the ruling Democratic Party’s candidate for the upcoming presidential election.

Harris had then said, “I am proud to be the Democratic candidate for the US President. I will officially accept the nomination next week. This campaign is about people uniting, inspired by patriotism, and fighting for the best.” Last month, President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race in the upcoming election, after which Indian-origin Vice President Harris was declared the 2024 presidential candidate of the ruling Democratic Party.

Delegates voted in favor of Harris

Harris’ candidacy was officially announced after five days of online voting by delegates of the Democratic National Convention. The party said in a statement issued before midnight that 99 percent of the delegates voted in favor of Harris. 4,567 delegates across the country voted for Harris. Harris will now officially accept her nomination. With this, Harris has become the first Indo-African woman to get a presidential ticket from a major US political party. She has also become the first Indian-American to become a presidential candidate from the Republican or Democratic Party.

Kamala Harris was born in Oakland, California on October 20, 1964 to Shyamala Gopalan and Donald Harris. Gopalan moved to the US from India at the age of 19. She was a breast cancer scientist, while Donald Harris was a professor at Stanford University. Donald was originally from Jamaica. Kamala Harris worked as a prosecutor in the Bay Area before becoming the government’s attorney general in 2010 and she was elected senator in 2016.
