US issued travel advisory, advised its citizens not to travel to Bangladesh

US Travel Advisory For Bangladesh: The US on Tuesday advised its citizens not to travel to Bangladesh. It has taken this step in view of the situation created by Sheikh Hasina’s sudden resignation from the post of Prime Minister on Monday and leaving the country amid protests that have been going on for a few weeks. The US State Department has issued the highest level (Level 4: Do not travel) travel advisory and has also advised non-emergency US government employees posted in Bangladesh and their families to leave the country immediately. More than 400 people have been killed so far in violent anti-reservation protests in Bangladesh.

The US State Department said in the travel advisory, “On August 5, 2024, the department has ordered non-emergency US government employees and their families to leave Bangladesh. Passengers have also been advised not to travel to Bangladesh due to the ongoing unrest in Dhaka. The advisory said, “Violent clashes have occurred in Dhaka, its surrounding areas and throughout Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi Army is deployed across the country. Flight operations at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport were temporarily suspended on August 5. Passengers should contact the concerned airlines to know the status of flights.”

The advisory advises that passengers should be alert to petty crimes in crowded areas. It also said that crimes such as robbery, theft, assault and drug trafficking have increased in major cities of Bangladesh, but there is no report of foreigners being targeted due to their national identity. According to the travel advisory, terrorists can target tourist places, transport hubs, markets/shopping malls, restaurants, places of worship, school campuses and government establishments. It said, “Due to security concerns, some travel restrictions have been imposed on US Embassy personnel in Bangladesh.”
