129 prisoners died while trying to escape from jail in Congo, most died in stampede

Giving information about the incident, the government said that at least 129 people trying to escape from Central Makala Jail in Kinshasa on Monday were killed. Giving information about this, Home Minister Shabani Luku said on Tuesday that out of 129 deaths, 24 died in the firing.

‘Not a single prisoner was able to escape’
The Home Minister of Congo said, ‘The rest of the prisoners died in the incident due to pushing or suffocation.’ He said that the administrative building of the jail, its food depot and a hospital also caught fire, in which about 59 people were injured. In a statement issued through video, he said, ‘Many people lost their lives and there was a lot of damage while trying to escape from Makala Central Jail.’ Earlier, a jail official had said that no prisoner managed to escape. He also said that those who tried to escape have been killed. The government is investigating the incident.
