Port-au-Prince: Security officials had to open fire to provide security to Haiti Prime Minister Gary Konile while leaving a hospital in Port-au-Prince. This information was given by the Prime Minister’s office. The office said in a statement that Konile had gone to Haiti’s largest hospital with National Police Chief Normil Rameau and some journalists, when gunfire was heard outside the building. The statement said that the Prime Minister had just finished recording an interview when gunfire was heard. It said that as soon as he and his team came out, security personnel fired some bullets.
No casualties reported
The statement said, “The Prime Minister and his team safely left the hospital and the Prime Minister was taken back to his office.” There are no reports of any casualties in this incident. Earlier this month, Konile and Haiti’s police chief visited the same hospital. Earlier, authorities announced that they had taken control of the hospital from armed gangs. At that time, Konile described the remains of the destroyed hospital as a “war zone.”
Hospital under control of security personnel
A statement issued by Konile’s office on Friday said that the hospital remains under the control of the UN-backed multinational security mission led by Haiti’s national police and Kenyan police, which aims to help combat criminal gangs that have spread widespread violence in Haiti.
