Police opened fire on protesters in Nigeria, fired tear gas shells; 13 people died

Abuja: At least 13 protesters have died during widespread protests against the economic crisis in Nigeria. A human rights group gave this information on Friday. The protests have taken a violent turn in many states, due to which curfew has been declared in many places. Officials confirmed the death of four people in the bomb blast and said that hundreds of protesters have been arrested across the country. Police opened fire and also fired tear gas shells while using force to remove thousands of protesters who took to the streets against the economic crisis in Nigeria. During this, 2 people have died. The local newspaper ‘Daily Trust’ reported that these deaths occurred in the northern Niger state, where protesters clashed with security forces after blocking a major road. Police have also opened fire in at least two other states.

Amnesty International’s Nigeria director Isa Sanusi said in an interview that the group has independently confirmed the deaths reported by eyewitnesses, victims’ families and lawyers. Meanwhile, the Nigerian police said that more than 300 protesters were arrested and curfews were imposed in the northern states of Kano and Katsina due to the looting of government and public properties.

One police officer killed

Police said that a police officer was also killed and several others were injured. The protesters are demanding to overcome the growing economic crisis, due to which the people of Africa’s top oil producing country are going through the worst phase. The protesters have demanded an end to “corruption and bad governance”. In the video of the protest in the media, some protesters can be seen looting warehouses and damaging public property. Security personnel and armored vehicles have also been deployed in many cities and towns of Nigeria.
