NASA Boeing is set to make an important announcement regarding the return of astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore from the International Space Station (ISS). After launching on the Boeing Starliner spacecraft as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, both astronauts, Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, have been present at the International Space Station since June 6. This mission, called Boeing Crew Flight Test, has faced technical challenges that have delayed the return of astronauts.
NASA and Boeing press conference on Thursday
The US space agency has informed that officials from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Boeing will hold a media teleconference on Thursday, July 25 at 9 pm to “provide the latest status of the agency’s Boeing Crew Flight Test mission to the International Space Station.”
During the press conference, an update can be found on the return of Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams, who are spending additional time in space than previously scheduled. Information will also be given on the “ground hot fire test” being conducted to ensure the safe return of Starliner to Earth.
Recently, the engineering teams of NASA and Boeing International Space Station (ISS) have completed ground hot fire testing of the Starliner reaction control system thruster at the White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico. These tests simulated various flight conditions, including the spacecraft’s approach to the space station and possible stress scenarios during undocking and deorbit burn.
Williams and Wilmore will return safely soon
This test is considered extremely important to ensure the safe return of Williams and Wilmore to Earth. The data collected from these tests is currently being analyzed, and the leadership plans to discuss the preliminary findings during an upcoming announcement. After this, NASA and Boeing will announce the date of the safe return of Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore.
Williams and Wilmore have been integrated with the Expedition 71 crew on the ISS, conducting scientific research on the space agency and overseeing maintenance activities. Their mission serves as an end-to-end test of the Starliner system, which is critical to NASA’s plan to certify the spacecraft for a variety of future missions to the ISS.
The successful completion of this mission and the safe return of the astronauts are important steps in NASA’s efforts to expand access to low Earth orbit and the ISS through partnerships with U.S. private industry.
