Washington: Bad days have come for snakes in the grass who conspire against India by taking donations from abroad. Modi government has now made the rules and regulations so strict for all NGOs receiving funding from abroad that it will now become very difficult for them to get donations. Till now some snakes in the grass have been conspiring against the country by getting foreign funding in the name of NGOs. Many such cases have come to light in the country, in which various NGOs used foreign donations to hatch a heinous conspiracy against India. But now the Indian government has amended the law and made it very strict. This has baffled even countries like America.
Democratic Party leader and senior MP in America, Tim Kane, has said that due to India’s Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), it has become “very difficult” for the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating there to get donations from people of other countries. Kane said during a discussion in Parliament on ‘Anti-NGO Laws and Other Methods of Democratic Suppression’ organized by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, “India has a law called the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act which was amended in 2010 and has been amended again in 2020. Due to this, it has become very difficult for NGOs operating in India to receive donations from people of other countries of the world.”
All the NGO operators who benefit from the government’s move have been in a panic. All the NGOs running on foreign funds have been in a panic after this law of the central government. Kane said, “‘Amnesty International’ and other organizations have had to either limit or close their services in India because their operations depend on funds raised through donations.” He said that due to this act, human rights activists and NGOs feel intimidated and this hinders their work. Kane said that this move has really harmed those who are the beneficiaries of the efforts of these organizations. He gave the example of ‘Sambhali Trust’, an organization from Rajasthan. This organization is dedicated to empowering women, especially those who are deprived or oppressed. Kane said that this organization had “a lot of difficulty” in receiving and transferring donations to continue its work. He said, “There are such laws all over the world but I just want to focus on the fact that these steps are a form of oppression that stops the work being done.”
India’s move caused panic
Kane said, “We often say that we are the oldest democracy in the world and that (India) is the largest democratic country in the world. We consider the relationship between America and India very important, but when organizations doing good work at the grassroots level face restrictions or cuts in their sources of funding, then we have to pay attention to it.” The senator said that the US State Department and various other agencies helped Sambhali Trust to deal with these financial obstacles, but there are many other NGOs that are facing challenges in advancing their services.
